Keeping your home clean can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task.  Day to day cleaning can be easier than letting the tasks pile up.  Tackling all of these tasks sometimes means using a lot of harsh cleaning products that can hurt the environment.  There is a solution, using green cleaning products like, vinegar, salt, lemon juice and baking soda.  Here are some tips on how to use these unconventional cleaning products to your advantage:
  • Glass and Mirrors- Ammonia-based window cleaners can be harsh on the nose and your eyes, you can effectively clean your windows with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice mixed with a half gallon of water.
  • Vinyl-  Stains on vinyl recliners or tile flooring sometimes seem impossible to remove, straight lemon juice on a cloth can remove these stains.
  • Furniture Polishing- Furniture polish is usually made with petroleum distillates and solvents, which are hazardous and poisonous.  One safe and effective way to polish wood is to mix 2 parts olive oil and 1 part lemon juice and apply to your furniture using a soft cloth.
  • Metal Work- Most metal polishes contain ammonia and usual at least one type of acid among other dangerous ingredients.  Bring shine to tarnished copper or brass with a mixture of salt, vinegar and flour.
Cleaning products can be harsh and dangerous.  You can avoid using these products by substituting typical household products, that most people have lying around the house.  For a full list of green cleaning tips visit
