Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.

316-262-8642

Happy Friday everyone! It seems that the month of February came and went in the blink of an eye and we are another step closer to the warmer Summer months. To celebrate the coming of March, we've gathered some fun facts about the month that you may not have known. Check out the following:
  • The month of March is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. The Roman battle season began in the spring.
  • In Old English, March was called Hlyda or Lide meaning "loud".  This was in reference to the loud March winds.
  • March used to be the first month of the year. In 1752 we switched to Gregorian calendar and thus begin the year on January 1st.
  • March has more than one birthstone: Bloodstone and Aquamarine.
  • The first three days of March are considered unlucky if rain falls during that time.
  • The violet is the flower for March.
  • March starts on the same day of the week as November every year.

Improvement Tips To Increase Your Homes Value

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.
1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213
316-262-8642

When attacking your home improvement projects, it's important to include changes that will increase the property value of your home.  Purchasing new furniture is a great way to reinvent the appearance of a room, but adds no additional property value.  We've gathered a combination of small and large home improvement tasks that are sure to boost potential buyer incentive and increase property value. The best part, is that each of these projects can be done at relatively low costs.  Check out the following:
  1. Add shelving.  Older homes often do not have the sufficient storage space that has become an appealing feature in newer homes.  Add shelves on blank walls to maximize your space.  You don't even need to hire a professional!
  2. Update your kitchen backsplash.  In a previous blog, we gave you great tips for incorporating glass into your backsplash.  Combine this with updated kitchen lighting and you've got yourself a seemingly new room!  This trick is a great way to increase your kitchens value. http://goo.gl/JxdaO7
  3. Install a new showerhead.  This simple task requires little work.  Purchase a new showerhead and install it yourself.  An upgraded showerhead enhances the luxury of your bathroom.
  4. Install shower doors.  Shower curtains are a thing of the past.  Now-a-days, the sign of a modern and updated bathroom is glass shower doors.
  5. Paint the exterior of your home.  Curb appeal is a major factor in property value.  Keep your home looking brand new with a fresh coat of paint.
  6. Refinish your hardwood floors.  Many people find hardwood floors a necessity as they are easier to clean than carpets.  Keep your floors looking brand new by having them refinished.  If you cannot afford it, a good waxing or shining will also do the trick.
  7. Upgrade your kitchen sink faucet.  Much like your showerhead, the addition of a new faucet will keep your kitchen looking up-to-date.
  8. Update your landscaping.  If you love gardening, then this is the perfect project for you!  Adding plants and flowers to the exterior of your home gives a more welcoming curb appeal.

Home Improvement Trends For 2014

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.
1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213
316-262-8642

Taking on a home improvement project can be stressful.  Deciding on the right theme or additions for your home can be difficult.  Stay up on the latest interior design trends with the following top trends for 2014.
  1. Get rid of your tub.  Less and less people are finding a bathtub necessary.  Why not get rid of it completely? Installing a curb-less shower with glass shower doors is a great way to increase the elegance of your bathroom.
  2. If you just can't part ways with your tub, why not make it more extravagant?  A free standing tub makes for quite the bathing experience and takes up less space.
  3. Install floating shelves.  Ample cabinet space is necessary in any kitchen.  Rather than having a long running slew of cabinets, break it up.  Including floating shelves provides more wall space to hang art and brighten the room.
  4. Bright colors are "in".  Avoid using earthly browns and opt for a pop of color, like cobalt blue!
  5. Using stone, metal or wood are materials in home structures is a popular trend that will not die in 2014.  However you will see a change in design.  Rather than the industrial look that was so popular in 2013, a rounder design with the use of more earth tones and shades will create a more relaxed and modest feel.
  6. Express your personality.  Unique frames and layering will be common methods of self-expression in the new year.
  7. Eco-friendly trends are on the rise.  Cabinets with no added formaldehyde and non-toxic glues will be in high demand.  Join the trend!

Keep Your New Year's Resolution: How To Get Fit At Home

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.
1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213
316-262-8642

Did you resolve to get fit in the new year? Joining a gym and maintaining a workout regime requires motivation and dedication.  The last thing anyone wants to do when they get home for a long day at work is head back out to the gym.  Similarly, who wants to wake up an hour early to drive to the gym to workout?  There's a simpler solution.  Make your resolution possible by bringing the gym to your home.

It's easy to transform a spare room into a home workout haven.  Check out the following tips:

  • Add mirrors.  Adding floor length mirrors is essential to any gym.  Working out in front of a mirror allows you to practice proper form and helps you track your progress and see results!  Bell Mirror and Glass can help get your home gym ready with such mirrors. Contact us to learn more.
  • Add a television.  The t.v. will allow you to watch workout videos or help pass the time by watching your favorite show or movie.
  • Buy the equipment.  Depending on the results you desire, a home gym requires very little gear.  Purchase resistance bands, some free weights, and a medicine ball and you've got yourself a heart pumping workout.  If yoga is more your speed, purchase yoga matts.
  • Paint the room bright colors.  With one wall already covered in mirrors, the other 3 should be an inspiring color; one that will make you happy to be in that space.  Working out requires motivation so the home gym should entice you.  Feel free to personalize the space by adding your own creations to the walls.  All it takes is a paintbrush and paint!

If you're looking to add mirrors to your home or business, Bell Mirror and Glass can help! We offer custom shaped mirrors in a variety of colors.  Our craftsmen are skilled in all areas of mirror creation and are trained to provide services for commercial and residential customers.  Contact us to learn more about our services.  Don't forget to Like us on Facebook and FOLLOW us on Twitter for more tips on how to incorporate mirrors in your home.

5 Easy Tips For A Cleaner Bathroom

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.
1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213
316-262-8642

For most of us, cleaning the bathroom is a daunting task that requires toxic chemicals and can be a workout in and of itself.  You shouldn't have to dread keeping your space clean, even if it is a room guests rarely see.  Your bathroom should be a welcoming place as it is a personal space for you and your family.  We've gathered 5 easy tips to keep your bathroom clean without using harmful cleaners!  You'll be surprised by what these everyday materials can do!

  1. Battle soap scum with baby oil.  Baby oil helps to soften the soap scum that accumulates on the side of your tub.  Mix 1 part baby oil with 4 parts water in a spray bottle.  Try to avoid spraying the floor of the tub when applying to the sides.  Let the solution set for a few minutes and then wipe it away using a damp cloth or sponge.  If the floor of your tub is slippery from excess oil, wipe it down with some vinegar.
  2. Sweep away soap stains with stockings.  A paste made from cream of tartar and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide helps to remove soap residue from the bathtub, sink or surrounding tiles.  If you don't have a bristle brush, an old pair of nylon stockings works fine!  Roll them into a ball to form non-scratch cleaning scrubbers.
  3. Clean the toilet bowl with cola.  You heard correct!  We said soda!  Empty a can of cola into the toilet bowl and let it sit for about an hour.  Then scrub and flush.  Any sticky drops left over can be wiped up with white vinegar.
  4. Banish toilet bowl rings.  Sprinkle borax around the inside of the bowl and into the water before you go to bed.  In the morning, take a brush and whisk the stains away.  White vinegar and baking soda can also get the job done.
  5. Unclog the drain with foam and fizz.  Hairballs and cosmetics are just some of the reasons your drains clog up.  Help unclog a slow drain by pouring 1/2 a cup of baking soda down it, followed by 3/4 cup of white vinegar.  These two substances tend to fizz and foam when combined so stand back after pouring.  After 20 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.
Voila!  Your bathroom will be spotless in no time! See more cleaning tips here.  For more serious bathroom improvements, such as installing glass shower doors, contact Bell Mirror and Glass.  Our experienced craftsmen are skilled in delivering the highest quality glass and mirror services.  Visit our website to learn more about your home or office improvement options!

Flashback Friday-The History of Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.

1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213

316-262-8642

Bell Mirror and Glass has provided the highest quality custom glass and mirror services for over 50 years.  Dean and Ruth Bell started their business in 1963 in a barn in Sedgwick County, Kansas.  It was one of the first glass shops in the state, and one of the few shops in the Midwest to own and operate glass beveling machinery.  Initially, Bell Mirror and Glass focused its services on building and installing shower doors, replacing window glass, and performing light commercial glass installation and repairs.  By 1970, the Bell children took an interest in the family business, giving Dean the opportunity to expand his repertoire of services.

The business naturally outgrew the barn and a subsequent location on Douglas Avenue until finally settling into its present home in Wichita.  Much of the Bell Mirror and Glass success can be credited to the wide array of services offered, including a variety of colored mirror and glass, and different glass patterns, which are especially popular among architects and interior designers.

The business' long history provides unparalleled experience in glass beveling and allows the company to create custom design mirrors by sandblasting artwork and logos onto glass and mirror services. Bell Mirror and Glass is proud to remain a family owned business and is dedicated to putting a personal touch into each project.

Holiday Decorating Traditions Unveiled

Bell Mirror & Glass, Inc.
1702 S. Seneca Street, Wichita, KS 67213
316-262-8642

People celebrate the holidays and show their spirit through various forms of decorating.  Have you ever wondered where these holiday traditions originated? Check out these popular decoration items and the history behind them!

Holiday Lights: Lights are not just hung on a Christmas tree.  Many people choose to string lights inside the house, outside, or both!  The tradition dates back to a time when electric bulbs didn't exist.  Instead, candles were burned in the windows of Christian homes, symbolically guiding the Christ child from heaven.

Wreaths: This holiday decoration can be spotted hanging from many doors in the neighborhood.  Wreathes have not always been a holiday tradition!  They originated in ancient Greece where they were made from olive branches.  Different cultures have since adopted their own form of the wreath but the use of holly and evergreen make it a holiday staple.

Garland: Nowadays, garland can be bought in stores and in various colors.  We often use it to decorate trees and brighten our homes.  Originally, garland was made from evergreens that were woven together.

Christmas Trees: One of the most famous decorations during the holidays is a Christmas tree.  It is a tradition that has been made infamous through Rockefeller Center in New York City.  Every household can decorate their tree in their own unique way, with ornaments and lights and garland!  The lighting of evergreens with candles originally celebrated the winter solstice.

Dreidels:  This Hanukkah toy is known around the world, thanks to its namesake song.  A dreidel is a four-sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side, representing the phrase "a great miracle happened here."  The toy is used in a traditional Hanukkah game where players receive chocolate coins or other forms of currency.

Menorahs:  A menorah is also an essential part of the Hanukkah celebration.  The menorah is rich in history and is a tradition that has been passed down for centuries.  In 165 B.C. the Maccabees, a Jewish liberation group, recaptured their Jerusalem temple from the Greeks and restored it back to order.  The menorah that existed in the temple had been extinguished and the Maccabees only had enough oil to light a flame for one day.  Miraculously, the menorah burned for eight straight days.

Stockings: No home is complete around Christmas without stockings hanging.  Even if the home doesn't have a fireplace, it is still a tradition that is maintained.  It is said that the hanging of stockings by the fire originated in the fourth century.  A man, St. Nicholas of Myra snuck into the home of a family who had unmarried daughters due to their lack of money for dowries.  The girls hung their washed stockings by the fire to dry and St. Nicholas dropped gold coins into each one, thus resulting in an international tradition.

Bell Mirror and Glass can help you make your home special all year round with custom glass and mirrors.  Contact us to learn about our comprehensive services! Don't forget to Like us on Facebook and FOLLOW us on Twitter! For more traditional decoration items and their history, click here!

  •  Make sure everything is very clean.  Your guests won’t notice a few dust bunnies under your couch, but they will notice tooth paste splatter on your bathroom mirror!

  • Stock the vanity area with amenities your guests can use to feel comfortable.  These items can include anything from cotton balls to razors to a spare toothbrush.

  • Put a vase of fresh flowers in your bathroom to brighten up the space.  Not only will it look beautiful, but it will also give off a beautiful aroma.

  • Switch out worn or dirty shower curtains and liners and replace old bathmats with something new and plush.
  • Display colorful and good quality hand towels and bath towels.

  • Add “spa items” to your bathroom to spruce up its look.  This can include anything from loofahs, bath salts to inexpensive soaps and candles to create an ambiance.

  • Provide a hamper your used bath towels and linens that your guests can use.

  • Make sure all your bathroom fixtures are working and in good shape for your guests.  Also make sure that your plumbing is in working condition to avoid embarrassing scenarios.
